I got a forwarded email from Paul Han about prayer request (Adoremus).
Please pray for them...
Hi folks,
I have a quick prayer request for Adoremus, the
group here at Hopkins. It's great that I can
explain this without a whole lot of exposition,
since most of you already know where I'm coming from. :)
Recently, we sang with the other campus a
cappella groups at a concert held during JHU's
parents' weekend. Our songs were "And Can it Be"
and "Wonderful Grace of Jesus." Additionally, we
gave a brief spoken gospel message: sin is a
condition that God doesn't tolerate, Christ's
sacrifice covers our sin and makes us righteous in
God's sight, by grace alone we are made sons and
daughters.
Predictably (1 Cor 1:18, Gal 5:11), some
students took offense to our presentation, and one
wrote an editorial in the paper. We welcome the
discussion and free speech, and we a glad to receive
such criticism (Mat 5:11-12, Ac 5:41). However, the
administration has taken note of the complaints and
has asked to speak with us on Friday.
This is a private school, and JHU has carte
blanche to limit student speech. We expect that the
student activities folks will want us to change our
performances. Before we become angry, or
confrontational, however, we want to see exactly
what they had problems with. None of what we said
was pompous or derogatory, and it may be that (not
being at the concert) they have wrong impressions of
what we do. On the other hand, they may want us to
change our Gospel message, which we are unwiling to do.
We could use prayer for discernment, so we know
what concessions (if any) are appropriate for JHU
secular venues. We could also use prayer for the
future of the group--it is unlikely, but the
University could make certain requirements that we
may not agree with. We could also use advice: if
you've been in this situation before, sharing your
experiences would be helpful.
If you respond, please reply-all. Ajin and I
are not yet members of the list.
Thanks,
Nick
